Freytag Film Reviews Blackmagic’s UltraStudio Mini Monitor

Blackmagic’s UltraStudio Mini Monitor is a very cool, very small device that uses the new Thunderbolt connection that’s becoming more and more popular these days. mini monitor feat 2As relayed by Blackmagic itself:

When you need low cost monitoring for editing, then UltraStudio Mini Monitor is perfect. Plug in the Thunderbolt and monitor out of the SDI and HDMI outputs. Perfect for using low cost HDMI TV’s and projectors for monitoring.

It allows you to preview footage in your editing suite of choice (Avid Media Composer, Final Cut Pro or Premiere Pro) and does so in full HD. As for how well it works, well, here’s Freytag Film to give you a review of this pint sized power house:

After I got my new Macbook with Thunderbolt I also bought a Blackmagic UltraStudio Mini Monitor.

The big deal about this pocket-sized box is that it actually provides an SDI and HDMI output with 10 bit 4:2:2 video. It works with a wide range of software such as Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro 7 & X and of course DaVinci Resolve. It’s a really nice option if you need to show preview on an external display. The UltraStudio is only$145, which makes it a really nice solution for broadcast quality outputs.

For me it worked without any problems so far. I used it to preview footage in Resolve and Premiere Pro CS6 on an external monitor using HDMI. It showed all changes in Resolve in real-time and also played back unrendered PiP FullHD footage including keyframes without any dropped frames.
